Automatic to 5spd conversion

Well I am finally going to convert over to a 5spd transmission. I have been wanting a 5spd for a long time.

Here is a list of what is required to do the swap.

I got this for $320 off eBay. It has about 20,000 miles and came from a 97 Cobra.

What you'll need:

good used T-45 or new one if you have extra cash

flywheel

clutch

pressure plate

throwout bearing

pilot bearing

clutch fork

clutch cable & firewall adjuster

clutch cable clip

wiring harness

new yoke or 5spd driveshaft

dust shield

5spd pedal assembly

shifter bezel and boot

There are some small things like bolts for the bellhousing and stuff like that. A 5spd computer

may be recommended but is not required. I will continue to run my auto computer but

I have a Diablo chip and can get the auto tranny functions turned off.

Using a Cobra tranny in a GT

The Cobra transmission has a different tailshaft housing than the GT. As a result the crossmember

mounts are about 5 inches farther back than on the GT model. The picture below shows

the modifications that will have to be made in order to make the Cobra transmission fit the GT

crossmember. I think on 96-98 cars you may be able to move the brackets farther back and

drill new holes.

This is the custom plate that my mechanic made. It relocates the tranny mount farther back where the mounting holes are and the crossmeber gets to stay in the same place.

This is the King Cobra clutch kit that I bought from Total Performance. It was $191 shipped and

came with the pressure plate, disc, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and alignment tool.

This is a what a clutch fork for a T45 looks like. Notice that it is longer and has a counterweight

on the end of it.

By comparison this is a clutch fork for a 87-93 T5 transmission. This will not fit a T45.

This is the clutch cable. I got a UPR adjustable cable, firewall adjuster, and quadrant.

My friend Tony got me a really good deal on this and the UPR shifter.

This is a stock 96-98 6 bolt flywheel. It is very heavy. I got it for $50 from eBay.

This the UPR Blue Thunder shifter. It has a spring loaded feature that automatically finds

3rd gear for you when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. No more missing shifts!

Yes! the rest of my stuff came today. Daves Mustang Parts is great!

This is the shifter boot and bezel. The Cobra has a leather boot while the GT gets vinyl. Also the shifter knob on the Cobra is leather and the GT gets a plastic unit. I opted for both Cobra pieces full leather!

This is the 96-98 pedal assembly and also in there is the wiring harness an block plate. This completes the list as I know have everything I need to do the conversion.
