The Birth to Kindergarten Literacy Project
Thought For the Week
All children should
start school with
the advantage
that comes from fun, early language
and reading activities with parents
and caring adults.
&
Our Project focuses on enhancing literacy by emphasising the importance of reading to, talking to, singing to, modelling reading to and playing with children from birth. It is headed by a committee representing all the schools in Parkes, as well as the Early Childhood Centre and Shire Library. The whole community strongly supports us, from publishing articles in the local paper, to businesses hosting Stories in Stores, to the hospital and clinics distributing information.
Nine years from the Project's beginning, we have now had several schools request more information about implementing the Project in their own areas. Our innovations have attracted much media attention including Channel Nine's A Current Affair, The Sydney Morning Herald, and the Daily Telegraph. The annual Reading Day is attended by celebrities including Governor General Sir William and Lady Deane and New South Wales Governor Marie Bashir.
