In 1814, in the midst of War of 1812 tension, a group of Canadians made their way down to Washington DC
and set alight the original White House. All that remained were the sandstone walls. In 1817, the building
was rebuilt, and they've redoubled security around it whenever they hear that the Canadians are coming.
In 2004, a small contingent of Canadians made their way across the border once more, and began the
long journey to Washington DC. They travelled many hours, with their group divided between two buses,
and eventually made their way to Washington DC in the early (to them) morning, arriving in time for some
of the group to enjoy brushing their teeth and spitting on an authentic US parking lot.
This group then covertly wound its way to the National Mall area, where they unfurled their banners and
joined over 1 million other people in supporting human rights. The date was April 25th, 2004, and the
purpose of the March For Women's Lives was to raise a resounding call that people, in the US and
abroad, would no longer stand for the attack of the Bush administration upon women's health rights.
They called for an end to the Gag Laws, which prevent international organisations funded by the US
from providing information about abortions. They called for real sex education in the classrooms of
their nations, to counter the lies being spread that condoms cause HIV/AIDS. They called for an end
to the harrassment of women entering abortion clinics, and also an end to the murders being carried
out on doctors who perform abortions. They cried vehemently that we would never go back to the days
when a coat hanger was the primary option for a woman to receive an abortion.
And then, the group of Canadians packed up, restrained themselves from setting the White House on
fire again, got back on their buses, and went home.
