HOLY SMOKE

1999
JANE CAMPION

An often entertaining but ultimately disappointing grrrl power update of the pygmalion / taming of the shrew one-on-one battle of the sexes theme, wherein the combatants are interestingly imagined as beatific Aussie swami convert (Kate Winslet) versus slick American cult deprogrammer (Harvey Keitel). Winslet is excellent, energetic and subtle--the movie's main draw--and Keitel mostly holds up (and as always, bares) his grizzled end. But while Winslet's character actually unfolds and develops out in front of the genially unremarkable supporting cast, Keitel's latest Dirty Old Man's comeuppance from rooster to bitchified pigeon is abrupt and unconvincing, not to say icky. And rather than end by at least sticking to its ickyguns, an unnecessary epilogue recongeals whatever edginess was evoked by the final battle. Campion's editing is graceful and her wide shots of the Australian outback provide a bracing airy frame for Winslet's and Keitel's mano a mano tete a tete--but ultimately cliches are cliches in any language or setting.
