The dysfunctional mathemagic of Mystery Men is as follows: a good idea plus a great cast equals a bad movie, the x-factor possibly being the flickering powers of first-time director Kinka Usher. The movie's premise of workaday wannabe superheroes trying to make it big is engaging, and Ben Stiller's high-strung Mr.Furious, Janeane Garofalo's typically acid-sassy The Bowler and, surprisingly, Greg Kinnear's Captain Amazing are all worth watching. But whenever a scene with one or more of these characters gets some momentum, all sparks are extinguished by other, more annoying mystery men, such as Hank Azaria's grating Blue Raja or Paul Reubens's flatulent The Spleen, or by the profusion of underwhelming villains led by a hard-working Geoffrey Rush and a sleepy Lena Olin.
