OFFICE SPACE

1999
MIKE JUDGE

Bigshot animator Mike Judge's first live-action movie is a smart, satisfying, small comedy about Dilbertian cubicular angst, with a capable, understated cast getting the most out of Judge's savvy writing. The first 45 minutes or so, when our Everyofficeguy Peter Gibbons (played by Ron Livingston) cuts loose from all the constrictions of bureaucratic time-punching, literally knocking down cubicle walls, are often very funny and original, but the movie's pace gets mired midway in an obligatory "caper" plot involving a conspiracy to siphon some cash from the company, and in an even more forced tangential love-interest thing between Gibbons and Jennifer Anniston's mousy waitress character. Judge's use of a hiphop soundtrack to score his white collar misadventures is frequently funny, and on the whole, Office Space is a perfect rental.
