ROMANCE

1999
CATHERINE BREILLAT

Don't do it. The reviews you read when Romance came out said as much, and your friends have warned you not to waste your time and money--and yet you want an "explicit" arty sex film directed by a woman to be good, so you're thinking you'll probably see it anyway. Don't do it. Romance is utterly joyless and is as thoroughly jouissance-free as only the worst kind of french film can be, offering up its clinical nudity and strangely starched transgressions without style, story, or even an engaging performance.
