CityScape Posters

Poetry by John Hall. Illustrated by Jordana Archer.

Artwork Copyright Jarjam artworks

The idea is to improve the way we see our cities -- turn the spaces into something more vibrant, alive and welcoming. These blank, sheer surfaces in grey and steel need to be improved on. To make them more attractive, the suggestion is to dress the outside and inside of buildings with posters -- artwork and poetry.

The Book of Mists is being offered as the basis for these posters. The poetry is by John Hall.  Illustrated by his artist friend, Jordana Archer.

Examples can be seen through the links below.

This is the day I'm sure                           For this is the land of myths,
Of all things not quite pure;                     Peopled by gnomes and gryphs,
When the mischievous laughing gods       By the elfin people in their groves
Smile and even Jove nods.                      And faeries and goblins and tiny toves

This is the time of beginning                   My sense of wonder is I think,
Of the fabric of yarns spinning;               A strength that leads me to the brink,
Of walks by the distant shore                 And shows the shadows of wondrous lands
And the cliffs of dark Elsinore.                And feelings to reach with eager hands.

And yet it all began before me,
A world you helped me how to see.
I think that you commenced with mirth
Upon that day your day of birth.

The Book of Mists is a look at life through poetry and artwork -- a mystical looking at the trials and tribulations of our daily lives. The focus is on celebration, of enjoyment and our ability to overcome. It could be said that the poems are modern and challenging. But perhaps the issues are ageless.

Jordana, has adding a strength - an extra level of dimension to what is being said in the poems. This comes from her contribution as an artist and her perception as a woman, often hilighting a different aspects of what was being explored.

The Book of Mists takes us through a journey with many highs and lows with no guarantee of anything except the certainty of change. The feeling is that a poet must entertain.  Success is entirely dependent upon the audience enjoying and experiencing what they see within the poetry.  The hope is that audiences will share emotions and ideas with a warm cup of something. John Hall
Poet and Writer
http://www.eccentrix.com/members/johnhalllast

Born in Nedlands WA, he enjoyed his early years at Scarborough beach although never became what could be called a gifted surfer. Out of school he became a teacher, radio announcer and occasional actor, as he began to hone his writing skills. At other times he has been a Stage Manager, Stage Director and run workshop productions in student and fringe theatre. In the early 70s he began to explore the poet's land. Married twice, divorced twice he has been blessed with two daughters, but was devatated when one of them died in 2000.

His parents gave him the belief that everyone deserves the right to choose his own disasters, explore his own horizons and learn from his own mistakes. He is always thankful for their willingness to let him find his own way, while supporting his right to do so.

No longer in the blushing days of his early youth, he is a writer and poet with occasional involvement in the IT industry. He might be seen by some as impractical, impatient and a dreamer -- but he is persistent. In the past he has dealt with model making and special effects, completed a B.A. majoring in drama and written scripts for stage, film and TV. He have been involved with communication, presentation and training in IT. For the rest, he would prefer to let the poetry do the talking.

Artist

Jordana was born in India and came to Australia when she was two years old. She has lived there ever since and moved to the beautiful Blue Mountains in 1999. Jordana has made her living as an artist for nearly six years and works from her home based studio. She has exhibited in both the Blue Mountains and Sydney. In 2001 her faeries appeared on the Britney Spears CD "Britney".

Jordana works in a variety of mediums including pencil, pen and ink and oil. "No matter what the medium I have tended to lean towards black and white, probably because I feel that there is nothing to detract from the work and people look at the form of the piece rather than the beauty of the colours used to create that form."

" I admire the natural form of the female figure and I love the fantastical nature of faeries. My work therefore is a juxtaposition of the tangible and the transient. I am deliberately steering away from the traditional perception of faeries and towards the idea of faeries as a connection to reality, inherent in the beautiful form of a woman. Working with an ethereal theme has no boundaries. The possibilities are beautiful and inspirational."

EXPLORING THE CITISCAPE POSTER CONCEPT

  • The idea is to create a number of theme locations incorporating a series of full sized posters on streets, inside buildings and in parks.
  • The posters may be different sizes, exploring various visions and subjects, but all of them will combine poetry with artwork.

Overview and Industry background

An opportunity exists within the community for posters to be displayed in a number of areas, with different functions, adding enjoyment and positive feeling to the city environment. CitiScape suggests setting up displays in areas allocated for the purpose and allowing strategic partners to have posters shown in their premises.

Second tier opportunities will be found in retailing posters and using the artwork and poetry to cover large spaces such as atriums in buildings and outside walls of buildings.

The Products

CitiScape intends to develop posters and artwork, releasing four new posters as opportunities are developed. The posters can be showcased in locations where there is high density pedestrian traffic.

CitiScape hopes to market posters and cards based on the posters/artwork via direct marketing and through established artist distribution channels. There will also be marketing of illustrated poetry books through normal channels.

Mission

CitiScape has a commitment to:

  • build a profile of artistic vision in the cities and towns through out Australia.
  • develop posters which incorporate entertainment and a feeling of communication.
  • infect people with the idea of "community" in the workplace or marketplace.
  • give the streets and buildings of the city an orientation closer to friendliness.
  • create a network to encourage a culture of support and closeness through the arts.
