The Precipice

Like a juggernaut rushing to despair
He leads his own devilish existence
Taking me with him everywhere.

He laughs inside with antic insistence
Leaps forth ferociously demolishing defences
Courting the danger in the distance.

Charging carelessly over the fences
Protecting the inner softness I cherish
His final pursuit is relentless -

Keeping the hounds straining at the leash
And my heart in avid tension strung
Trying to find some way to reach -

To stop his song before it's sung
This demon, this fiendish imp
Who lives inside and wags my tongue.

To Marilyn -
For things I shouldn't have said.
