Sea Things

Up Queensland way they have some beautiful beaches

With miles on miles of shifting creamy sands.

And as you wander by the jutting reaches,

Islets drift by hand in hand.

Gulls cries carry across the bay, and lifted

By their callers

Drift downwards again to those below.

The waves continuous roll across walls built

by the tiny coral balls;

And on the seabed,

All life drifts by in the undertow.

The great crashing sound of waves,

Brings home to me,

Young days of joy, adventure –

Of wonder by the sea.

Animals strange and marvelous,

Fish and porpoise too;

Gather round, pass on –

Gaze incuriously at the view.

Sands harsh white in the sunlight,

Become soft marble beneath;

And shark and dhu fish stalk their prey

To end those lives so brief.
