Bass Fishing at Cajon de Peņas

Kim, sister of Nicole, our Recipe of the Month lady has contributed one of her concoctions for this month's fish cuisine recipe.

Phil took Ron Kugkitsh, our son-in-law Petr and his father Jan on a bass fishing trip to Cajon de Peņas.  In last month's column we reported that on Phil's first trip to this lake, he missed the turn off and ventured 27 kilometers beyond before he realized his error, a total of 54 extra kilometers.  This month, despite the 3 passengers on look out duty, old Phil did it again.  It seems that the sign was knocked down and this group also had the opportunity to enjoy the extra 54 kilometers of sightseeing at dawn.

Cajon de Peņas was definitely worth the drive though and Petr, an avid bird watcher was amazed with this area.  Jan, visiting from the Czech Republic had the opportunity to learn spin casting and see a more remote area of Mexico.  Ron was a patient teacher and Jan just may be hooked.  Four Large Mouth Bass were landed, two at 4 1/2 pounds and two at 2 1/2 pounds.

The fish was cooked for the group in a tiny rustic restaurant but one of them made it back to our daughter's kitchen.  Kim, fairly new at cooking is accustomed to boned filets of Dorado and was slightly taken aback at the sight of the scaly bass, complete with tail, head and eyeballs.  When the offending parts were removed, she fried it in oil and garlic and was amazed at how tasty a fish from 'Agua Dulce', fresh water turned out to be.  Father-in-law Jan was served meals of fish about 12 times in the 2 weeks that he spent with his family in Puerto Vallarta and will likely be greatly relieved to get back and sink his teeth into something containing meat.
