Ray's first band to obtain a recording contract was called Rick & The Ravens. The group consisted of Ray on vocals and piano, Rick Manczarek on guitar, Jim Manczarek on organ and harmonica, Roland Biscaluz on bass, Pat Stonner on sax, and Vince Thomas on drums. These are all eight singles the group recorded for Aura & Posae Records. All tracks sourced from the best possible sources and remastered for best quality.

Moonlight Drive / Hello, I Love You / Summer's Almost Gone / My Eyes Have Seen You / End Of The Night / Go Insane
These are The Doors' original demos that they recorded before being signed to Elektra. A completely different sound as this was recorded before Robby Krieger had joined the band. In addition to Jim, Ray, and John, the group featured Ray's brothers Rick (guitar) and Jim Manczarek (harmonica) as well as an unknown female bass player. Sourced from Jim Morrison's original acetate.

Love Me Two Times [No Drums] / Love Me Two Times [Drums & Vocals Only] / Riders On The Storm [No Whisper Track] / Riders On The Storm [Whisper Track Only] / Love Her Madly [No Bass & No Drums] / Love Her Madly [Drums & Vocals Only] / Love Her Madly [No Organ & No Drums] / Soul Kitchen [No Drums] / Soul Kitchen [Drums & Vocals Only] / People Are Strange [No Drums] / Light My Fire [No Backing Vocals] / Light My Fire [Instrumental] / Hello, I Love You [No Backing Vocals] / Hello, I Love You [Ray Vocals Only] / Moonlight Drive [No Drums & No Slide Guitar] / Moonlight Drive [Instrumental] / Touch Me [No Drums] / Touch Me [Drums & Horns Only]
These are alternate mixes made of nine Doors studio songs as released on "The Best Of The Doors" quadraphonic LP. Some mixes are less interesting than others. My favorites are the two versions of "Riders On The Storm" (with and without the whisper track) and "Hello, I Love You" with only Ray singing. I also have the entire quadraphonic album split into single mono channels, which is the closest we have to hearing the original studio multitracks.

Who Do You Love / Soul Kitchen / Hello, I Love You / People Are Strange / Riders On The Storm / Touch Me / Love Her Madly / Love Me Two Times / Take It As It Comes / Moonlight Drive / Light My Fire
The previously listed alternate mixes were made using "The Best Of The Doors" quadraphonic release. Quadraphonic was an early form of surround sound that used four speakers. Each song here has been split into four separate mono tracks so that each speaker channel can be heard on its own. This results in some very different sounding versions of these songs. Along with the "Perception" split channels listed befow, this the closest we have to hearing the original studio multitracks. This is a terrific transfer taken from a reel-to-reel source. I also have this in a DTS version for surround sound systems.
1967-1971 "Perception" Box Set [Split Channels]
Source: "The Doors: Peception" Box Set
Length: Varied
Quality: A+ (Studio Recording)
Like the above split channels from the quadraphonic release, this is the entire "Perception" box set (all six studio albums) with every song separated into five mono tracks so each surround sound speaker can be heard on its own. Some channels contain more bleedthrough than others. For example, the "Indian Summer" vocal track contains no bleedthrough and sounds like an original studio multitrack, while many other songs contain the vocals plus the bass track in the same channel.

Moonlight Drive / Back Door Man / Who Do You Love
This is believed to be the earliest live recording of The Doors to circulate -- though some say the correct date should actually be May 1967. The first two songs are sourced from a 2nd generation tape while "Who Do You Love" is sourced from the best quality bootleg.
1967-03-07 The Matrix Club - San Francisco, CA

Back Door Man / My Eyes Have Seen You / Soul Kitchen / Get Out My Life, Woman / When The Music's Over / Close To You / Crawling King Snake / I Can't See Your Face In My Mind / People Are Strange / Alabama Song / The Crystal Ship / Twentieth Century Fox / Moonlight Drive / Summer's Almost Gone / Unhappy Girl / Woman Is A Devil / Rock Me / Break On Through / Light My Fire / The End
An excellent early gig in great sound quality. This comes from a rare second generation tape and, unlike most bootleg releases, contains no noise reduction or missing portions. It's the best quality available to date. Though labelled as a soundboard recording, it's more accurate to call it a stage recording as microphones were hung by the PA system to capture the sound. (Note: "Who Do You Love" is often included in this setlist between "People Are Strange" and "Alabama Song" but that song is actually from the Avalon '67 show listed above.)

Same second generation source as above. Excellent sound quality. (Note: The cut version of "The End" included with this show is said to be from The Doors' performance on the 9th at the Matrix and is sadly the only material taped from that night to have survived.)

Source: 3rd Generation
Length: 26:23
Quality: B- (Audience Recording)
House Announcer / Soul Kitchen / Break On Through / Alabama Song / Back Door Man [cut] / The End [cut]
Nice low generation copy of this show. The end of "Back Door Man" is cut as is the beginning of "The End." Like the San Bernardino '67 show listed below, there is some debate as to the actual date of this recording. It's possible this tape dates from another Santa Clara area performance during the fall of 1967.

Introduction / People Are Strange / Light My Fire / Outro
The Doors' most infamous television appearance. The band performs "People Are Strange" and "Light My Fire." Producers had asked Jim not to sing the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher." In rehearsals, Jim agreed. But during filming, he sang the original line anyway. The band was then banned from "The Ed Sullivan Show." Includes the complete, as-aired performance along with Sullivan’s intro and outro.

Light My Fire
The only song to have surfaced/survived from this recording. This version runs at the correct speed (most copies run too slow). I also have a nice sounding master clone transfer of this track, but unfortunately it contains a lot of noise reduction.
1967-10-XX Cheetah Magazine Promo (The Tom Maule Show) - KHJ Radio - Los Angeles, CA
Source: RealAudio File (MR>RealAudio>WAV)
Length: 00:47

Cheetah Magazine Promo
An amusing little clip I discovered back in 2000 and circulated in 2002. It's a radio promo recorded by Jim Morrison for Cheetah Magazine and aired on October 11, 1967 during The Tom Maule Show (it was likely recorded several days/weeks before and aired on several different KHJ radio shows). I originally transferred this clip from a RealAudio stream of the 1967 radio show and all circulating copies come from my transfer. It's likely the RealAudio stream came from a 1st generation recording of the original broadcast. Jim's opening line: "This is Jim Morrison of The Doors suggesting you can light your own fires and open your minds by turning on to a new magazine called Cheetah."

Though labeled an audience recording, this was in fact recorded through the school's PA system by a faculty member. The sound quality, however, is comparable to a very good audience recording. Unlike bootleg releases of this show, this tape has no cuts during "Break On Through" and contains Jim's complete introduction to "The End."

Introduction / When The Music's Over / Horse Latitudes / Tuning / Break On Through / Alabama Song / "We'll Be Right Back" / Light My Fire
Problems with the PA system force the band to end this show early despite Jim's claim to the audience that they would be right back. There is a possibility that this show is in fact from the Kaiser Dome in San Bernardino on July 4, 1967. The Kaiser Dome was a venue on the same grounds as the larger Swing Auditorium. Information is still unclear, but If anyone can help track down a review or the taper for this show, please let me know.

The Doors were on the bill with Otis Redding for these December shows at the Winterland. Sadly, Redding was killed in a plane crash only two weeks before they happened. Great quality soundboard. Unfortunately, some of the songs feature vocal overdubs from 1970-era recordings used to fix errors on the master recording and to "punch up" the performance in places (most notably during "When The Music's Over"). This source is also missing "Hello, I Love You." But it does contain the complete version of "The End." This is the best transfer I've heard of this material, taken from the original laserdisc release.

Recently discovered uncirculating show. Similar in quality to other recordings from the 1968 tour. "Back Door Man/Five To One" medley is very similar to Boston '68. Jim gets annoyed during "When The Music's Over" and yells at the audience to "Shut up and listen!" Also features a nice extended version of "Soul Kitchen" with some unique lyrics. I have the original transfer as well as a remastered version I made which seamlessly removes all distortion/scratches present on the original source.

While my theory remains unproven (though Greg Shaw agrees with me), I firmly believe that there are two different shows on this tape. The first three songs appear to be from one show (possibly the early show on the 7th) and the remaining four songs from another (possibly the late show on the same night). The sound quality, tape speed, wave form, hiss level, and track listing have all convinced me that there are two different performances on this tape and, since this tape has always been presented as a single show, the strongest likelihood is that they both come from the same night. For more information or to discuss this matter futher, please feel free to contact me.

Tuning / Break On Through / Alabama Song / Back Door Man / When The Music's Over / Texas Radio And The Big Beat / Hello, I Love You / Light My Fire / The Unknown Soldier
Unlike most circulating copies of this show, this is sourced from the vinyl release of "The Night On Fire" bootleg (Tangie Town Records, 1981). The same label released a CD version under the same name in 1995 but, strangely, with inferior sound quality. The belief is that the LP was sourced from the original master tape whereas the CD version was sourced from a cassette copy. This vinyl transfer has been speed-corrected and gone through some light click/pop removal. Also, the original LP fades out after "When The Music's Over" (the end of side one). On this version, the fade out has been removed to blend into the following track as on the original tape by synching up the audience noise. The resulting sound quality is the best I've heard for this show.

Includes Vince Treanor's announcement to the audience asking if The Doors should go on without Jim plus all of "Light My Fire" and a one-minute portion of "The Unknown Soldier." House Announcer / Tuning / Introduction / Tell All The People / Love Me Two Times / Who Scared You / Spanish Caravan /
The Crystal Ship / Wild Child / Touch Me / Light My Fire / "What Do You Really Want?" / The Celebration Of The Lizard
A third source for this show. Very nice quality audience recording. Recently remastered and speed-corrected. It seems this taper was the closest to the stage of the three. Sadly, he later erased "The Celebration Of The Lizard" from his master tape. So this copy includes "Celebration" from a very low gen copy of the first source (much better than the version I have listed above). All in all, this is the best sounding version of the complete show.

This is a new transfer for the second generation source I once had listed here. This version sounds much fuller than the last transfer which had an almost mono sound. The overall quality is also much crisper on this version. Jim delivers an enthusiastic performance tonight.

The famous studio jam session. Sourced from the best quality bootleg. Note that the first version of "Whiskey, Mystics And Men" included in this bootleg is actually from another date and is not technically part of the Rock Is Dead session. I also have two other versions of this tape that contain extra portions which are listed below.

Sourced from a purported 2nd generation tape. This is the most complete version of the studio jam available. Contains slightly more material than "Missing Links." The addition of a version of "Whiskey, Mystics and Men" from another session on the bootleg release accounts for the slightly longer running time. This source is actually the most complete version of the Rock Is Dead studio jam as it contains no material from other sessions.

Sourced from a purported 1st generation tape that originally came from Bruce Botnick. This is an edited version of the Rock Is Dead session likely compiled by Paul Rothchild. The quality is better than either source listed above, but it suffers the most cuts/edits. This version also contains a few small bits missing from the second source.

This version is mixed with a very rare LP release of that includes a few extra seconds at the beginning of the recording and some missing lines of dialogue during "When The Music's Over." Making this uncirculating version the most complete Miami tape available anywhere.

Some live recordings generically labeled as 'Absolutely Live' outtakes. These are soundboard recordings made by The Doors from various live shows, but the quality is much less than one would expect from a soundboard source because they were recorded poorly -- but they're still better than some audience recordings. Currently, these clips are the only way to hear the first performance of "Someday Soon" and other songs from the Pittsburgh '70 show. Recently expanded to include uncirculating tracks from the Boston and Felt Forum shows. Whenever I obtain the complete soundboard recordings for these shows, I will remove the appropriate songs from this list.

Introduction / Roadhouse Blues / Break On Through / Ship Of Fools / Crawling King Snake / Alabama Song / Back Door Man / Five To One / Build Me A Woman / "Bring Out Your Dead" / The End
A great performance and probably my favorite of the circulating Felt Forum shows. Unfortunately, it's incomplete. The taper claims to have lost one of the original tapes. Missing from the show (between "Build Me A Woman" and "The End") is "Who Do You Love," "Wild Child (Attempt)," "When The Music's Over," "Light My Fire," "Soul Kitchen," and, most disappointingly, a joke told by Jim. Thankfully, whenever the soundboard recording of this show is released by The Doors everything should (hopefully) be intact.

A tight performance that includes my favorite version of "Moonlight Drive." For some reason, a portion in the middle of "Roadhouse Blues" is missing. There's also a brief cut during "Horse Latitudes." Aside from these cuts, there are no missing songs on this tape.

The last from the series of shows The Doors played at the Felt Forum. Also a very long show. John Sebastian (harmonica) and Dallas Taylor (drums) join the band onstage for a few numbers. This is the first of two circulating audience recordings for this show. Unlike the second source, this tape includes most of the blues songs played after "Light My Fire." The only song missing is "Close To You," which was performed between "Rock Me" and "Going To New York." (The taper didn't record it.) Oddly enough, it's the same performance of the song used on the 'Absolutely Live' album. The second half of this tape (starting with "Rock Me") is often used as the second half of most circulating copies of this show.

Jim's Dialogue With The Audience / Roadhouse Blues / Peace Frog / Alabama Song / Back Door Man / Five To One / Celebration Of The Lizard / Build Me A Woman / When The Music's Over / Soul Kitchen / Petition The Lord With Prayer / Light My Fire
This is the second source for the late show at the Felt Forum on January 18th. Unlike the above source, this tape includes Jim's opening comments to the audience. Unfortunately, the taper only taped until "Light My Fire" and missed all of the blues songs that followed. This source is often used as the first half of most circulating copies of this show due to having slightly better quality.

An alternate source for the Long Beach show with better sound quality but unfortunately every song is horribly cut. There was something wrong with the taper's recording device and there are constant problems with the tape. However, this source does include portions of "Universal Mind," "Carol," and "The End" which are not on the other circulating source. This copy was taken from a DAT of a 2nd generation tape. In an unusual twist, rather than perform the final portion of "The Celebration Of The Lizard," Jim breaks into the Elvis Presley hit "Heartbreak Hotel" before the band ends the show with an extended "Light My Fire" medley. While this seems to be one of the more interesting performances captured on tape, the sound quality is
probably the worst of any circulating recording. Here's hoping a better version comes along someday. I recently remastered this tape to remove a large amount of tape hiss and it's currently the best sounding copy I've ever heard -- with the exception of a few tracks released on the "Celebration" LP.

1971-01-XX Jim Morrison/Bob Chorush Interview - Los Angeles, CA
Source: Low Generation
Length: 125:01
Quality: B (Private Recording)
Bob Chorush's complete (and long) interview with Jim Morrison for the Los
Angeles Free Press. The article this tape originates from was released on January 15, 1971
so the date for the recording falls between the 1st and the 15th of January (given the
topics discussed and the release date of the Free Press article). Jim shares a lot
of interesting information. This comes from the best, low generation source available for this recording.

Ben Fong-Torres's interview with Jim Morrison for Rolling Stone Magazine. Jim's longtime girlfriend, Pamela Courson, also joins the conversation. This would turn out to be Jim's final interview.
1971-06-16 Jim Morrison's Final Studio Session - Jomo And The Smoothies - Paris, France [?]

Warm Up & Tuning / "Starting Now!" / Orange County Suite
Supposedly this is Jim Morrison's final studio recording. Rumor has it that
this was recorded in Paris in 1971 (with an oddly specific date), but there's been nothing substantial to prove that. Others
believe it may have been recorded in Los Angeles just before Jim left for Paris, still making it his last studio recording. The box on the original master reel, which was discovered in Paris after his death along with a copy of his 1969 poetry session, was labelled (apparently by Jim himself)
as "Jomo And The Smoothies."

An uncirculated recording of The Doors performing without Jim Morrison at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. This is also the earliest known Post-Morrison Doors recording. The band had started their tour only a week and a half earlier.

All circulating copies of this show that I've been able to find come from a minidisc source. While the audio compression isn't nearly as bad as mp3, it is still technically a lossy source. I'd be interested in tracking down a non-minidisc source for this show. Please contact me if you can help.

I have two complete sources for this recording. One is great quality, and the other has a hum running through it but it contains an extra track ("Good Rockin'") that, if it is indeed from this session, was either played during the soundcheck or after "Ships With Sails." Both versions contain more tuning/chatting between songs than the broadcast video version. There's a slight possibility that "Light My Fire" was also performed.

Audio from recently discovered raw footage of the band performing on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972. Only "Tightrope Ride" has ever been broadcast or officially released. This is the uncut footage of the group working out a few different songs for the broadcast. There's a lot of downtime between songs and the group goofs around a bit. These performances feature live vocals but pre-recorded music.
