NONFICTION MARKETS
THE CANADIAN WRITER'S JOURNAL
Box 1178,
New Liskeard, Ontario
Canada, P0J 1P0
submissions@cwj.ca
From the writer's guidelines:"Canadian Writer's Journal is a digest-size magazine for writers emphasizing short "how-to" articles which convey easily understood information useful to both apprentice and professional writers. General policy and postal subsidies require that the magazine must carry a substantial Canadian content. We try for about 90% Canadian content, but prefer good material over country of origin, or how well you're known."
Well, it's only 90% canadian, so there's hope for those of us from elsewhere. They DO accept electronic submissions.
THE ANTIOCH REVIEW
P.O. Box 148, Yellow Springs, OH 45387
From the writer's guidelines:
"Our audience is made up of educated citizens, often professional people, who are interested in matters beyond their fields of special activity. With few exceptions, our subjects cover most of the range of social science and humanities. Our approach tries to steer a middle course between scholars speaking exclusively to other scholars in their field, and workaday journalists appealing to a broad popular audience; both these approaches have their own journals and audiences. We try for the interpretive essay on a topic of current importance, drawing on scholarly materials for its substance and appealing to the intellectual and social concerns of our readers. We are also interested in reviving the moribund art of literary journalism."
They do not read essays or fiction from June 1 to September 1. They also don't read poetry from May 1 to September 1.
THE SILVER WEB
A MAGAZINE OF THE SURREAL
BUZZCITY PRESS
P.O. BOX 3819O
Tallahassee, FL 32315
From the writer's guidelines:
"Please query- about specific articles. Interested in interviews with Writers, poets, artists, etc. Satire and humor also invited and I love Letters to the Editor."
I have always found them to be a good market submissionwise. They respond and I have even gotten personal comments/recommendations from them. They do not accept electronic submissions.
THE PEDESTAL MAGAZINE
4915 Charlton Lane
Charlotte, NC 28210
USA
From the writer's guidelines:
"We are currently seeking poetry (experimental/traditional), fiction (literary, experimental, science fiction, fantasy), and nonfiction (academic work, as well as essays dealing with a broad range of topics)."
Another good market that accepts a broad variety of genres.
THE MID-SOUTH REVIEW
midsouthreview@yahoo.com
From the writer's guidelines:
"We like great humor, serious and literary stories of any type or style (nothing gimmicky). We like short-shorts as well as fully-rendered work; always reject gore, violence, hate, erotica, and science fiction. If you’re still not sure, familiarize yourself with previous issues before submitting."
They are not a paying market, but the last time I checked they were still active.
ECLECTICA MAGAZINE
submissions@eclectica.org
From the Writer's Guidelines:
"Eclectica is a quarterly World Wide Web journal devoted to showcasing the best writing on the web, regardless of genre. "Literary" and "genre" work appear side-by-side in each issue, along with pieces that blur the distinctions between such categories. Pushcart Prize, National Poetry Series, and Pulitzer Prize winners, as well as Nebula Award nominees, have shared issues with previously unpublished authors."
Good electronic market, active and easy to submit to as their formatting requirements aren't unnecessarily difficult.
THE WORLD & I
3600 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, D.C. 20002
From the writer's guidelines:
"THE WORLD & I is intended primarily for a thoughtful, educated audience. We accept articles from journalists but also place special emphasis on scholarly contributions. It is our hope that the magazine will enable the best of contemporary thought, presented in accessible language, to reach a wider audience than would normally be possible through the academic journals appropriate to any given discipline.
Below is a list of guidelines pertaining to all writers submitting manuscripts to THE WORLD & I."
Snooty, elite publisher. If you don't have extensive published clips to send with your article, it would probably be wise to try another market.
